Before I found yags, I was considering using another free RPG called Fringe (Free Integrated Game Engine) as the basis for a CRPG. In Fringe you roll sets of six-sided dice for determing success and every “5 or 6 you roll in your success pool counts as a success.” The number of successes also matters:

If an action is challenging the game master may assign a difficulty to the roll. This can be anything from 1 to 10, with 1 being a tricky task and 10 being for nigh impossible feats of heroism.

When you roll against a difficulty you not only roll a success pool, but also a failure pool of six-sided dice equal to the difficulty. A roll of 5 or 6 with a failure pool dice counts as a failure which cancels a success from the success pool and increase the chance of failing a roll.

In order to properly determine the difficulty of actions, I needed to determine how likely x number of successes was. This is where Frappe (Fringe-applied Probability Engine) comes in. It began as a crude command line script doing just that. I recently decided to clean it up, add a gui, add a data exportation feature to it, and release it. It only took a few hours to beautify it. The program is now in its beta phase and will be released soon. 8)

Yeangasy Progress Report #1

Yeangasy first began as a crude command line script. It was named YAWP (Yet Another Work in Progress), a reference to Yags (Yet Another Game System) but I found there was already a program named yaWP (yet another Weather Plasmoid), so I renamed it yeangasy (yet another game system). It’s a shame too, as I was looking forward to running my barbaric code upon the desktops of the world. Take a gander:

The program was recoded almost entirely from scratch and now yeangasy has all of the features that YAWP had. The difference is that yeangasy also has a GUI, a help feature, and you can enter personal stats with it, all features lacking in YAWP. This is just a verbose way of saying development of yeangasy has not only caught up to that of YAWP but has developed beyond YAWP’s capabilities. Take a look:

Intervalence 0.9.1

I’ve changed the way Intervalence provides correct answers and made it less confusing. Before, it would simply say something like, “Incorrect. The correct answer is G.” Now it’s clearer, saying something like “Incorrect. A Major 2nd down A is G.”

I also forgot to license my documentation. That is rectified as well, with my documentation dual-licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license and the Free Documentation License 1.3. This version is now available from Sourceforge.

Unfortunately, installing GTK+ on OS X looks like more trouble than its worth, so I have no shots of Intervalence in Aqua. A mac expert might be able to run Intervalence on their system but I’ve decided to not officially support OS X.

Intervalence Beta Ready for Release

Intervalence is a very simple and minimalistic program for musicians, designed to test their ability to correctly spell intervals. It began, some time ago, as a crude command-line script:

It only took me one day to build a GUI for it and add a grading system to it. On selecting an interval to test one’s spelling of, it randomly generates a starting note and direction:

Once an ending note is entered, the program tells the user whether or not they guessed corectly and randomly generates starting note and direction again:

The user can also ask the program at any time how well they are doing and will be given an evaluation:

I consider this program to be in its beta phase and it will be released shortly. 8)
